Internet Safety Tips

Internet security is a shared responsibility. To ensure a positive online experience, it is important that you follow safe computing practices to protect your personal computer and your personal information. This includes taking measures to protect your passwords, using anti-virus software, using a personal firewall, keeping your software and operating systems current, and being cautious when downloading files to your personal computer.

  • Use an anti-virus program. Always use anti-virus software that scans files and email messages for viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. There are several anti-virus products on the market that, if configured to do so, automatically keep anti-virus updates current.
  • Use a personal firewall. Any device connected to the Internet is susceptible to malicious attack if it is not properly protected. A firewall creates a barrier between your personal computer and the Internet allowing you to control the flow of information to and from your computer.
  • Protect your passwords. Difficult to guess, unique passwords are the best. Longer passwords that mix numbers and letters are more difficult to guess than shorter ones. Under no circumstances should you share your passwords with anyone (including Affinity Credit Union staff). Use different passwords for different web sites and accounts, and change your passwords on a regular basis.
  • Use a secure browser. To make sure that you can complete your transactions securely and confidentially, you must use a Web browser that has 128-bit secure sockets layer encryption (SSL). Although other Web browsers may also function, we've tested two that are proven to work with Affinity Credit Union Internet Banking Services: 128-bit Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.5x or higher) and 128-bit Netscape (version 7.x or higher).
  • Do not send confidential information by email. Although email is common and widely used today, it is not secure. You should never send us confidential information by unsecured email.
  • Use only trusted software. There are risks associated with using software or files from unknown sources and with using pirated software. Viruses, spyware, adware, and other potentially malicious code may be bundled in these types of software and can cause harm to your computer or allow others to steal your private and confidential information like account numbers, passwords, and to track your Internet browsing habits.
  • Keep your software up to date. It is not uncommon for security holes and software bugs to be identified in commercial software after it is released. It is important to regularly visit the software vendors’ websites to obtain security patches and software updates.
  • Be wary of requests for personal information. Affinity Credit Union will never present you with unexpected web pages or send you unsolicited emails asking for your password or account numbers. Should you receive such an email, please notify us immediately at one of the phone numbers below.
  • Beware of identity fraud. Protect your personal information, memorize passwords, and report thefts and losses immediately.
